Frequently Asked Questions About Ketamine Treatments

Learn more about IV ketamine therapy, SPRAVATO® treatment and the evaluation process at New York Ketamine Infusions.

What conditions may be evaluated for ketamine treatment?

New York Ketamine Infusions evaluates adults experiencing depression, treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, bipolar depression and certain other mental health concerns. Ketamine is not appropriate for every person or condition. A medical evaluation is required to determine whether IV ketamine, SPRAVATO® or another care pathway may be appropriate.

What is the difference between IV ketamine and SPRAVATO®?

IV ketamine is administered through an intravenous line, allowing the clinical team to carefully control the dose throughout the infusion. Its psychiatric use is considered off-label. SPRAVATO® is the brand name for esketamine, a prescription nasal spray used for certain adults with depression under medical supervision. The appropriate option depends on the patient's diagnosis, health history, previous treatments and insurance requirements.

How do I know whether I am a candidate?

Candidacy is determined through an individualized consultation and review of your symptoms, diagnosis, medical history, current medications and previous treatment response. The clinical team also reviews potential contraindications and discusses the expected benefits, limitations and risks before recommending treatment.

What happens during a ketamine treatment session?

Treatment takes place in a comfortable clinical setting while trained medical professionals monitor you. During an IV ketamine infusion, the medication is administered gradually and vital signs are monitored. SPRAVATO® is self-administered under staff supervision, followed by a required observation period. Procedures and monitoring may vary according to the treatment prescribed.

How many treatments will I need?

The number and frequency of treatments vary according to the therapy, diagnosis, clinical response and treatment plan. Some patients begin with an initial series followed by reassessment, while others may be considered for maintenance treatment. Your clinician will explain the proposed schedule before treatment begins.

What side effects can occur?

Possible short-term effects may include dizziness, nausea, temporary changes in blood pressure, altered perception, sedation or a sense of detachment. Patients are monitored during and after treatment. Because driving may be unsafe after treatment, patients should follow the clinic's transportation and post-treatment instructions.

Does insurance cover ketamine or SPRAVATO® treatment?

Coverage depends on the treatment and the terms of the patient's insurance plan. IV ketamine therapy is frequently self-pay because psychiatric use is off-label. SPRAVATO® may be covered when eligibility and prior-authorization requirements are met. The clinic can help patients understand available payment and insurance-verification options.
